Course Description
In this course students will write in a number of creative nonfiction
formats, including the personal experience article, personal
opinion essay, review, and profile as well as a researched article
using a creative nonfiction approach. The course will cover using
fiction techniques, such as metaphor, dialogue, voice, and point of view,
to make the nonfiction writing more eloquent and dramatic. The course
will also cover how to get nonfiction work published. Course requirements:
Undergraduate
Letter (400-1000 words)
Personal experience article or personal opinion essay (500-1500 words)
Review (400-1500 words)
Profile (1000-2000 words)
Informational article: Rabout,S service, how-to or round-up (1500-2500
words)
Query letter
Student's choice assignment any length
Present one of your own a manuscripts to the class. This involves
reading portions of the work out loud and receiving feedback and evaluation
from other members of the class.
Give a five-to-ten-minute presentation to the class on some aspect
of creative nonfiction (e.g. interview a working writer, publisher or agent
and report on it to the class; attend an author's reading/book signing
and report; report on current bookselling trends, etc.)
Participate in an in-class manuscript discussion group.
Graduate

Final paper linking what you have learned in this course with your
graduate coursework to date.

PREREQUISITES:
Undergraduate
Junior standing and six credits in writing courses or consent of the
instructor.
Graduate
Enrolled in English or other graduate program.
