English 350-816-001 Seminar in Poetry Writing: The Language of Imagining Instr:
Lisa Samuels
Course Information: W 4:30-7:10pm CRT 468
Course Description This course will combine reading contemporary poets, carrying out poetry writing exercises and assignments, and reading each other’s work. We will consider different ways of writing poems, from short lyrics to modular sequences to narrative poems. We will talk about page space and layout as well as about words, images, phrases, lines, stanzas, and poetic “sentences.” We’ll also talk about the nature of poetic presentation and representation, including the use of pronouns, articles, scenes, abstractions, and the way in which poetry makes imaginative art with the epistemological tools of language. Course texts are to be determined.
