Course Description

About this course----
April 6, 2001, The Milwaukee Brewers played their home opener in the crown jewel of baseball diamonds, Miller Park. The Brewers won that game and a new era of baseball history began in Milwaukee.

This new very notable beginning for the Milwaukee Brewers is shaped by past history.  Did you know that in 1952 when Milwaukee County was building Milwaukee County Stadium, it was being built for a minor league team? Milwaukee County spent the money on a stadium even before they had a team!  It wasn't until March, 1953, when the Boston Braves decided to move from Boston to Milwaukee that this city had major league baseball. The Braves played their first season in Milwaukee in a new stadium.

This course will consider the myth of baseball in America, the reality, and the dream.  In this class, we will read the novel SHOELESS JOE, by W.P. Kinsella and then watch the movie, FIELD OF DREAMS.  We will tour the Golda Meir Library Archives where students will get a first hand look at some of UWM's archival materials about baseball in Milwaukee.  On
September 15, 2001, we'll get group tickets, see a game and get a long-sleeved UWM Panther shirt.  Bring your family and friends. Discussion will range from factual to mythical and many topics in between.

Throughout the semester, guest speakers and field trips will make the class activities varied and exciting.  Join the Freshman Scholars If You Build It They Will Come class and have a great learning experience!

Mariann Maris, Coordinator of English 102, loves baseball. A Brewers season ticket holder, she, her husband and children
follow the team closely.  During the winter, she looks forward to the day pitchers report for spring training.  Just as sighting the first robin, for some, represents the return of spring, for the Maris’, spring training signals another wonderful season of baseball. When she's not at a game or working at the university, Maris pitches (slow-pitch) for William Ho's woman's softball team.
