English 350-825-001 Seminar in Major Figures: James Joyce Instr:
José Lanters
Course Information: W 4:30-7:10pm CRT 466
Course Description James Joyce (1882-1941) is one of the major representatives of literary Modernism. But there are many facets to his work: there is an Irish Joyce, a postcolonial Joyce, a Classical Joyce, a satirical Joyce--and so on. In this course we will explore different facets of Joyce's work with the aid of a variety of background materials, ranging from ancient mythology to contemporary criticism. The course will focus on Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses; we will leave aside the lesser works (such as the poems and the play) and Finnegans Wake, which would require a course (a life?) to itself, but students are, of course, encouraged to do additional reading. Assessment will be based on a class presentation designed to stimulate
discussion, class participation, and two research papers (one on the early
works, one on Ulysses).
