The Literary Imagination: How to Read and Write About Literature

Course Description

The course is designed to offer opportunities for reading some of the world’s best poetry, fiction, and drama, while developing further expertise in advanced composition by writing several papers on the literature. The experience will be enhanced by learning a literary vocabulary and various critical approaches to discussing stories, poems, and dramas, such as : Historical, Neo-Historical, Psychological, Feminist, Masculinist, Formalist, Postmodernist, Personal Response, and Combos.

Requirements:
1. Consistently high quality, in-class participation
2. Reading of all assignments prior to discussing them
3. Writing four 750-word papers.
4. Writing one 1500-word paper, due on the final day of classes.
5. Reading of one of your 750-word papers aloud to the class.
6. Reading of a personal or creative piece of writing at the end of the semester

Texts:
1. Ann Charters, The Story and Its Writer (Choose 4th or 5h edition, the "shorter" version).
2. Tennessee Williams, Streetcar Named Desire (any edition)
3. Edward Albee, The American Dream and Zoo Story (any edition)
4. David Madden, A Pocketful of Poems

All assignments are due on the dates assigned. Late work may receive a lowered grade at the discretion of the Professor. Final grades will be determined by the student’s performance on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 above.
