Course Description
In addition to exploring images of Black women in 20th century African
American novels and films, this course will analyze
linkages between the women and mythic memory. Other issues to
be considered include: the symbols associated with women of African descent;
the representation of African and African American culture, history, and
activism; the text as political. Authors and filmmakers include:
Gloria Naylor, Octavia E. Butler, Zora Neale Hurston, Nella Larsen,
Paule Marshall, Jessie Fauset, J. California Cooper, Kasi Lemmons, and
Julie Dash.
