Course Description

In this course we will examine major American Short Stories from the 19th century up to the present day. We will look at authors such as Poe, Twain, Hemingway, and Flannery O'Conner, but also more recent fiction writers. We will examine these authors in order to become more familiar with their style and voice and engage in critical discussion about the specifics of their work. Basic fiction elements such as plot, setting, point of view, theme, tone and metaphor will be examined in a class format of discussion rather than lecture. I want us to engage in large and small group discussion of various authors and how they write.
