The Creative Writing Program recently launched a new "publication", the Java Jacket Journal, which features short stories (very short stories, < 160 words) printed on hot beverage insulating sleeves. The first six stories debuted at the Grind coffee shop in the student union and will soon make their way to coffee shops around town. Future editions are slated for the next academic year. (To read the first "issue", either visit a participating location and buy a coffee, or download a copy of Java Jacket Journal 1-1 (pdf 55kb).
As seen in USA Today: bus riders in Milwaukee - and throughout the nation - can view poems that have been re-imagined into videos by UWM film students as part of Poetry Everywhere, a partnership between UWM and the Poetry Foundation.
See the films and meet some of the poets and animators involved at 7:00 on Tuesday, April 29th at Downer Schwartz (refreshments provided by Café Hollander).
Poetry Everywhere on iTunes. You can also watch the films at pbs.org and poetryfoundation.org. Read about Poetry Everywhere on the UWM web site.
Visit Café Hollander and Trocadero during April, and you'll be treated to a feast of words as part of Eat Local::Read Local, featuring the work of Milwaukee poets, including Kim Blaeser, Rebecca Dunham, Maurice Kilwein-Guevara, James Liddy, Marilyn Taylor, Dawn Tefft, and Diane Unterweger,.
Read about Poetry Everywhere and Eat Local::Read Local in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
In November, National Book Award nominee Jean Thompson came to our campus to read from Throw Like a Girl, her latest collection of short stories, and a New York Times Notable Book in 2007. Jean presented "A Second Opinion" during her craft talk for graduate students, her rebuttal to Stephen King's essay about the demise of the short story. You can read it here: http://maudnewton.com/blog/?p=8047
