The Literary Life...in Milwaukee!
 |
Milwaukee Art Museum |
Most people know Milwaukee as home to breweries and Harley Davidson motorcycles, but did you also know it is the birthplace of the typewriter? That hardly seems surprising given that Milwaukee is also home to a thriving arts and literary scene that you may find conducive to the writing life.
In addition to the Visiting Writers Series, the Creative Writing Program sponsors the Faculty-Student Reading Series, giving our graduate students the opportunity to present public readings along with our excellent faculty members at various Milwaukee locations.
Elsewhere on the campus of UWM, you'll find active, innovative work being done in the Music, Film, Dance and Visual Arts departments.
The neighborhood around UWM is home to three exceptional bookstores: People's Books, Woodland Pattern Book Center, and Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop.
All three bookstores offer extensive selections of books and other activities.
- People's Books is the meeting place for civic- and politically-minded organizations like Teach Justice and the Milwaukee Chapter of the National Organization of Women.
- Woodland Pattern Book Center is also home to an art gallery where exhibitions, artist talks, readings, experimental films, concerts and writing workshops for adults and children are presented. Recent events and readings at Woodland Pattern have included:
- The Lorine Niedecker Centenary Conference
- Amiri Baraka
- Simon Ortiz
- Igor Vishnevetsky
- Juan Felipe Herrera
- Judith Harway
- Mark Strand
- John Koethe
- Myung Mi Kim
- Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops presents an active schedule of readings. Many of the writers who appear at Schwartz's are truly literary giants. In the last year alone, Schwartz's has hosted the following writers:
