English 430 is designed for advanced writers who wish to develop their analytical, critical, and stylistic skills as essay writers. We will take a rhetorical approach to the essays we read and the essays we write and critique. This approach closely connects author, subject, audience, purpose, and context. More specifically, we will read contemporary essays such as those published in The New Yorker and Best American Essays 2007, and students will write both conventional and experimental essays on topics of their own choice. Designed for both writers and teachers of writing, the course will take a workshop approach.
