Course Description

The Celtic regions of the British Isles have a rich tradition of folk and fairy tales, some of which date back to pre-Christian beliefs. In this class, we will explore folk beliefs underlying these tales. We will examine tales from both contemporary and historical collections of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. We will consider definitions and classifications of types of folk and fairy lore. Students will also explore the cultural significance of folk and fairy tales. They will look at the evolution of folk tale collecting from an antiquarians' hobby to an academic discipline.

As a Freshman Seminar, the course will also cover the basics of conducting scholarly research. Students will discuss how to read and critically comment on literature, how to locate sources efficiently in the UWM library, and how to write a paper in the MLA style.
