Course Description

In this Freshman Seminar, students will learn about the literary tradition of satire, examining its varied motivations and techniques, and discussing its levels of effectiveness as political strategy. Students will read seminal satirists like Juvenal, Jonathan Swift, and Alexander Pope, as well as explore modern popular adaptations of satirical techniques such as in Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Students will develop critical reading skills, discussion skills, and a basic understanding of genre conventions associated with satire, its literary history, and its modern applications. During the course of the semester, students will also have the opportunity to develop their voice and college-level writing skills by composing a short satire on a topic of their choice.
