Even if you don't know that much about contemporary American poetry, as long as you are open to enjoying and learning about new writing and committed to being prepared for class, you should do well. You will be exposed to a variety of different types of poetry: from more traditional forms to the prose poem to experimental/performance poetry. I plan to use the following texts: Legitimate Dangers: American Poets of the New Century; The Miniature Room by Rebecca Dunham (Rebecca will come to our class as a guest speaker!); Return to the City of White Donkeys by James Tate (who will be at UWM in the spring to give a reading!); The Ecstasy of Capitulation by Daniel Borzutsky; as well as a unit on performance poetry. Student evaluation should involve short e-mails (500 words) to a partner every other week about the readings; one collaborative creative project; and one essay focusing on some aspect of contemporary poetry/poetics. There will also be extra credit opportunities. Attendance is important. This should be an enjoyable, informative class.
