Course Description

This course will be one of the most unusual you will take at this university. Did you ever think you could get college credit for reading "comic books"? Well that is part of the course, the enjoyment of the art of comics or the much expanded graphic novel. The key to this course is to see beyond the frame, the obvious story and to learn how to analyze the pages of these novels through our texts Understanding Comics and Comic Book Nation along with the graphic novels. The first part of the semester we look historically at the comic book later the graphic novel. After the mid-term we will examine specific books. There is one exception. The House of Leaves will be used through the entire semester because of its length, complexity and overlapping narratives. Horror not Superheros will be the focus of this course with I Am Legend and 30 Days of Night.
