In this course, we will explore various interdisciplinary works, some individually and others collaboratively composed, that involve poetry in concert with other art forms. First, we will consider the history of ekphrasis and examine a number of poems composed in response to works of visual art, as well as such poems composed in response to music. Next, we will consider projects that include both poetry and visual components in juxtaposition, rather than in response, to one another, as well as projects that completely merge the two arts, such as concrete and visual poetries. Finally, we will both read and listen to collaborations between poets and musicians, from spoken word to experimental sound pieces. Assignments will include an analytical/critical essay, a reading journal, an individually composed creative piece, and a collaboratively composed creative piece.
