In addition to exploring images of black women in contemporary African American novels and films, this research seminar will analyze linkages between black women and mythic memory. Other issues to be considered include: the symbols associated with women of African descent; the representations of African and African American culture, history, and activism; the text as political. Each student will: conduct independent research, evaluate research on a specific topic in the field, integrate the findings into a research paper, and discuss her/his research paper during an in-class presentation. This course integrates technology and traditional methodologies to explore the subject. English 631 is cross-listed with the Department of Africology.
