Course Description

In this junior-level class students will learn about the history of the academic area known as folkloristics and discuss the various genres of folklore found in literature. We will look many different types of folkloric genres including urban legend, myths, folk tales, folk religion, folk belief, foodways, material culture, occupational folklore, and crypto mythology. We will read texts by a variety of authors including Zora Neal Hurston, Angela Carter, Laura Esquivel, Nathanial Hawthorne, Alice Walker, and Isabel Allende.
