In this sophomore-level course students will examine the enduring genre of the slave narrative. We will also discuss the social, political, and cultural reasons for neo-slave narratives. In this course we will read works by both African-American and Caucasian authors. The required texts for the class are Oroonoko, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Middle Passage, Beloved, Kindred, and Flash for Freedom.
