Technical Writing

Course Description
Technical Writing prepares students to be effective writers, in their future professions. Students will develop workplace writing skills and apply the technical and rhetorical principles that are the foundation of workplace writing. The course will introduce students to some of the basic issues, elements, and genres of technical writing:
- Analyzing context, purposes, and audiences to determine appropriate writing and design choices
- Employing writing as a process, including research, drafting, testing, revising, and editing
- Addressing social issues related to writing, such as ethics, politics, biased language, and culture differences
- Learning effective collaboration and project-management strategies
- Developing an effective professional tone and style
- Writing clear, concise, consistent, and accurate prose
- Employing rhetorical strategies for effective visual and document design
- Becoming familiar with genres of professional and technical communication
- Gaining proficiency in using computer-mediated communications
