Course Description
The course explores the role that cinema plays in the formation of contemporary identities in the context of the U.S. as a nation. In particular, the class emphasizes the relationship between film (both fiction and documentary) and the social construction of racial, ethnic, gender, class, national and sexual identities. Since identities are historically-specific phenomena, texts will be studied as sites of negotiation where contextual social relations are articulated filmically. The class approaches films from various perspectives: historical, sociological, political, cultural and ideological, among others.
