Course Description
Students in this course will learn the essentials of: targeting copy for specific audiences, preparing manuscripts for publication (including content editing, copy editing, and proofreading), the production process, the business aspects of publishing, and the fundamentals of layout and design. Although the course will emphasize nonfiction, general audience magazines and books, other types of publications will also be covered, including academic, professional, and trade publications.

Line editing of magazine manuscripts
Analyzing and writing headlines
Reslanting an article for a different audience
Evaluating book proposals
Report on the production process of a local publishing concern
Final group project: Publication of a newsletter, magazine, or other publication
Graduate students:
Additional assignment of their choice.

Working with copy assignments, 25%
