Course Description
English 820 will run as a practicum aimed at helping students conduct independent research and prepare for specific program requirements. At the most general level, we'll focus on the transition from graduate student to independent researcher/young faculty. There are many steps in this transition, and since the class is composed of students at different stages, you will each focus on your own specific situation. For PhD students, the most pressing needs may be passing the preliminary exams and writing a dissertation proposal. For MA students, the needs may center around writing and defending a masters thesis. In a very real sense, this will be a course focused on getting through and beyond graduate school. As part of the practicum, we'll also attend a number of academic events held at UWM this spring, including a graduate student conference and several arranged by the Center for 21st Century Studies.
