Course Description
This seminar provides an intensive survey of Irish literature in English from the Act of Union (1800) to the late twentieth century. Using Declan Kiberd's Inventing Ireland (1996) as a guiding text throughout, we will focus on the evolving construction of the concept of "Irishness" through literary and cultural texts of the past two hundred years. Authors will include: Maria Edgeworth, Oscar Wilde, G.B. Shaw, Somerville & Ross, W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, J.M. Synge, Sean O'Casey, James Joyce, Elizabeth Bowen, Samuel Beckett, Flann O'Brien, Brendan Behan, Seamus Heaney, Brian Friel and Tom Murphy.
