Course Description

This class will be writing- and discussion-centered, and it will be guided by Federico García Lorca's famous comment that the "poet is the professor of the five senses." We will study and write poems that refer to all of the sensory modes. We will do several sensory exercises inside and outside of the classroom. We will read and discuss Juan Felipe Herrera's Lotería Cards and Fortune Poems: A Book of Lives (with linocuts by Artemio Rodriguez). Juan Felipe, a dynamic sense-based poet and performer, will visit UWM in early April, so we'll be able to hear him and see him in person! Student evaluation will most likely involve composing eight original poems and two substantive revisions, a short essay that offers a researched discussion of poems that have influenced your own poetry, an original collaborative presentation, and regular attendance and constructive participation.
