Course Description

This section of 325 takes as its focus 21st century short fiction, with selections from authors both established and new. In addition, students will read selections from previous centuries to develop a sense of how the form and aesthetic of the short story has developed over time. As such, the course is well suited to those both interested in reading short stories and in writing them. Course requirements require weekly readings and quizzes, a series of short papers and an optional creative writing assignment. Schedules permitting, a number of authors will visit the class to discuss work of theirs that the class has read.

Required texts: 30/30: Thirty American Stories from the Last Thirty Years. Porter Shreve & b. Minh Nguyen, editors (ISBN 0321338987), along with various pieces placed on e-reserve.
