Course Description
This course allows graduate students to work independently on their poetry with frequent tutorials and occasional workshops.
First week: students meet as a group to discuss common interests and to plan their work for the semester. Weeks two to thirteen: students work independently, but individuals and teams meet with the Instructor. Weeks thirteen to fifteen: class reconvenes to read and discuss work done by the members during the interim. Students must provide written critiques.
There are two texts in the course: Lorine Niedecker's The Granite Pail and Robinson Jeffers's The Wild God of the World. These will be used to elucidate poetics and the creative process; a ten page paper will be required based on one of the above poets.
Each student will submit 25 poems (unless there are long poems) in weekly segments, each segment to be followed by a tutorial.
Participants will choose and duplicate fifteen pages from their portfolio to read in the final classes.
Assuming attendance is in order, grades will be: 70% portfolio, 15% discussion, 15% paper.
