Course Description
James Joyce (1882-1941) is one of the major representatives of literary Modernism. The many publications generated by what has come to be known as "the Joyce industry" have revealed the multi-faceted nature of his accomplishment, giving us an Irish Joyce, a postcolonial Joyce, a feminist Joyce, a satirical Joyce, a Classical Joyce, and so on. In this course, we will focus on Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses, and explore those different facets with the aid of a variety of background materials.
Assessment will be based on a class presentation focused on a particular aspect of Joyce's work and designed to stimulate discussion (20%), class participation (10%), and two papers (35% each).
Provisional Reading List:
James Joyce, Dubliners
James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
