Course Description
Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is one of the leading literary theorists and cultural critics of our time and a key figure in feminist, Marxist, and postcolonial studies. In this seminar we will look closely at her writing, out of an appreciation of her major contributions as a theorist as well as an interest in her writing practice. The methodology of the course is close reading - a method well-suited to appreciate the complexity of her writing, which often crosses disciplinary boundaries and inevitably involves us in questions of ethical and political responsibility.
