Course Description

The course will survey different filmmakers from Mexico and Cuba, two Latin American countries that have greatly contributed to the development of the cinemas of the Americas and of the whole world. The specific political and economic situations of Mexico and Cuba have provided very particular contexts for the creation of films that seek to use cinematic culture to construct distinctive versions of these countries' histories and national imaginary. A partial list of the filmmakers that we will study include Santiago Álvarez, Felipe Cazals, Alfonso Cuarón, Fernando de Fuentes, Guillermo del Toro, Jesús Díaz, Emilio "El Indio" Fernández, Julio García Espinosa, Sergio Giral, Sara Gómez, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Alberto Gout, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, María Novaro, Fernando Pérez, Arturo Ripsten, Humberto Solás. Along with exploring the articulation of national characteristics, our analyses of Mexican and Cuban films will also pay close attention to the construction of difference (particularly race, class, gender and sexuality) within the specific discourses of Mexicanidad and Cubanidad.
