Course Description
This course will introduce students to fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction writings with an emphasis on the techniques of close reading. The selected texts will cover a variety of time periods as well (i.e. Medieval, Victorian, Modern, and Contemporary). We will mostly be studying the non-conformists; writers who did not conform to the literary conventions being used during their lifetime and/or who's characters thwarted societal norms. We will also focus on writing critical essays about literature. Students are required to do close readings of all texts and to write two short essays on two texts of their choice. Since it is impossible to write critically about literature without knowing key literary terms, each of student will be assigned to research, find an example of, and present a literary term to the class in both a written essay and oral report. This course will be run as a discussion/lecture. Participation in class discussions is mandatory if students wish to do well in the course.
