Course Description
This should prove to be an engaging and interesting exploration of various forms of performance practiced by Latino artists in the United States. We will look at films that are written, directed, and acted by Latinos. (Possible films include Accordion Dreams, And the Earth Did Not Swallow Him, Pinero, Born in East L.A., The Men of Company E, Mi Familia/My Family.) We will read plays written by Latinos, possibly including work by Luis Valdes, Maria Irene Fornes, John Leguizamo, Milcha Sanchez-Scott. We will read José Rivera's "Sueno" and see the production of this play at the Milwaukee Rep. We will also listen to and read work by Spoken Word artists, including robertkarimi, Pedro Pietri, Olga Angelina García, Guillermo Gomez-Peña, and Brenda Cárdenas. We'll ask ourselves: What are some performance tendencies that we find across genres? And what are the cultural and historical factors at work that contribute to these connections? How do these works differentiate themselves?
