Course Description
Magical realism is a common literary technique, one that is employed by authors and filmmakers to accomplish a variety of different effects. One function that magical realism often performs is that of self-examination; that is, magical realism is often used by authors and filmmakers to take a look at how art of all kinds is produced. In this course, we will be looking at how magical realism is used to examine the art of the story, the power of story, and the necessity for story in all of our lives. Early in the course we will focus on your responses to the texts we read and view; as the course progresses we will expand our reading to include the criticism of established scholars, and our reactions to that new information, as well. We will place an emphasis on the writing of strong academic papers, and you will have an opportunity to produce a creative project as well. This will also be a course based heavily on discussion, so be prepared to share your thoughts and ideas about the texts in question at every class meeting.
