Course Description

This course will examine the development of the American short story from the 19th century to the present. We will read such authors as Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Flannery O'Connor, Ernest Hemingway, Louise Erdrich, and Gloria Naylor, but will also read more recent fiction writers including Jhumpa Lahiri and David Foster Wallace. Class discussions will focus on such topics as character, setting, plot, voice, narrative distance and reliability, point of view, symbol, and theme. Close reading and a variety of writing exercises will provide fodder for lively classroom discussion.
