Course Description

This course will examine a number of works by prominent Native American authors, specifically focusing upon how Native Americans writers deal with Native American identity. Students will be asked to look at issues of race, class, power, and gender to discover how they affect identity. Students will also look at how the authors play with narrative construction--mixing elements of poetry, fiction, myth, and oral traditions. Students will be asked to compare and contrast texts to consider the difficulties in establishing one set, unchanging identity.
