Course Description
This course will focus on classic and contemporary short fiction, drawing upon both the unassailable, canonized works of the last century, and the flourishing world of literary publishing today. We will read work by short story writers who have mastered the art of traditional storytelling, as well as those who push the boundaries of the genre and create new possibilities for those who come after them. Students will write both creative and critical responses to these works, with the ultimate goal of understanding the short story from the point of view of both a scholar and a practitioner.
