Course Description
Our course will pursue the creative imagination in many of its poetic forms, with an emphasis on the material of everything we use to write: paper, screen, pen, sounds and shapes of words, fingers on keyboards, pages in books and hung on the wall, articulations of reading aloud (rhymes, assonance, etc), shapes on paper (sonnets, open field composition, drawn forms alongside letters and words, variable layout possibilities), and the relation of world objects to word objects. Students will read contemporary poetry, write poetry every week, help each other with your creative processes, investigate a poetic form or question for a class presentation, and collect work into individual 'portfolios' at midterm and endterm. We will also compose a class chapbook. Avid participation required.
