Course Description
This course will be an introduction to some of the major African-American poets, novelists, and playwrights of today. We will read and discuss poetry by Lucille Clifton, Rita Dove, and Cornelius Eady, and novels by Toni Morrison, Ernest Gaines, and Gayl Jones. We will also take time to read and discuss Fires in the Mirror, by Anna Deveare Smith. Students will be required to complete daily entries in a reading journal to be collected at mid-term and at the end of the semester. Students will also be expected to attend regularly and participate actively in class discussions.
