Course Description
This course introduces students to the field of cultural performance through a study of key concepts and works by leading performance theorists. What is performance? The field includes theater, ritual, performance art, dance, sports, folklore, and practices of everyday life such as identity formation, cultural transmission, and, yes, even the words and actions that make up student life. We will approach this broad spectrum of cultural forms through the interdisciplinary perspective of Performance Studies, which draws on theories from anthropology, sociology, theater studies, art history, linguistics, philosophy, and cultural studies.
