Course Description

James Joyce (1882-1941) is one of the major representatives of literary Modernism. While we will also read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, this class mainly functions as an introduction to Ulysses. There are many facets to this complex, funny, moving, challenging work: Irish, international, Classical, satirical, postcolonial, linguistic, stylistic, and so on. This class will follow some of these paths into the book, and will open up further avenues for future exploration. Assessment will be based on class participation (10%), a class presentation (20%), and two research papers (35% each).

Books:
James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (Penguin 20th Century Classics)
James Joyce, Ulysses (Random House/Vintage)
Weldon Thornton, Allusions in Ulysses.
