Course Description
In the mid-seventeenth century, a civil war marked the beginning of a political crisis in England that lasted through the first quarter of the eighteenth century. One hundred years later England had become the most powerful nation in the world. How did England achieve this prominence, and what role did literature play in the process? In this course we will read poetry, novels, non-fiction, and a play from the long eighteenth century. Topics we will explore include: consumer culture and crime; changing definitions of the family; nostalgia and the supernatural. Authors on the syllabus include: Behn, Pope, Swift, Gay, Gray, Walpole, and Austen. Regular attendance and active participation expected. More than three unexcused absences will result in automatic failure. Weekly quizzes and homework assignments; a 5-6pp paper; mid-term and final exams.
