Course Description
This course will introduce you to theories and methods of teaching English to speakers of other languages. We will begin by tracing the historical development of second language teaching methods from grammar-based curricula to present-day interactive methods, where most of our focus will be placed. We will also discuss progress in the field of second language acquisition that has led to the development of interactive language teaching, which emphasizes negotiated learning and learner-centered curricula, and most recently "focus on form". In addition to the theoretical focus, we will discuss the practical aspects of teaching ESL. In class, we will discuss the readings, do activities and projects, and occasionally interact with guest speakers who are professionals in the field. Outside of class, you will be responsible for observing ESL classes at UWM or at other adult ESL sites in the Milwaukee area. By the end of the semester, you will be well-versed in applying the interactive methods that are currently being used in most ESL classrooms, and you will be qualified to enter ESL classrooms as apprentice teachers.
