Course Description

In this course, students will apply a variety of academic approaches to humorous short stories. Through class discussion and response papers, a midterm examination, and a final project, students will develop and refine their approaches to both literature and humor. While theoretical approaches are key to studying literature, students will also consider how the humor is constructed in a given piece, who is "in on" the joke, and whether or not each story is actually funny. The stories should be both studied and enjoyed.
