Course Description
This course provides an introduction to business writing, which includes business reports, memos, and letters; this course is particularly appropriate for students in business and related areas, although it is open to students from any major. The course requires critical thinking, problem solving, attention to detail, ingenuity, and a significant commitment of time to complete the writing assignments. Students should be aware of the substantial effort needed to complete this course successfully.
Course goals include the following:
- Analyzing a variety of business contexts and producing texts that fulfill goals of those contexts
- Employing writing as process, including research, drafting, testing, revising, and editing
- Gaining familiarity with genres of business communication
- Learning effective collaboration strategies
- Employing rhetorical strategies for effective visual and document design
- Gaining rhetorical awareness of the workplace and disciplinary ethics
- Practicing and gaining confidence in making oral presentations
- Learning proficiency in using computer-mediated communications
