Course Information
This course will help you become more proficient in researching, planning, writing, and revising documents aimed at helping business associates resolve workplace problems, fulfill workplace goals, or simply perform better in their jobs. More specifically, in English 205 you will:
- Fulfill goals and resolve problems in the business world with clear, informative, persuasive, convincing, well-designed, and highly readable documents,
- Write ethically in a variety of business situations,
- Create documents for uninformed, international readers that they find clear, comprehensive, interesting, and relevant to their lives,
- Participate actively in team projects to gain some experience with collaborative writing, which is becoming more common - and more important - in business contexts, and
- Develop time management skill and the ability to meet project deadlines.
Because all these skills contribute to effective communication in business contexts, the main goal of English 205 is to give you "a competitive edge" and increase your chances of contributing in valuable ways to current or future employers.
Assignments include a resume and cover letter, a variety of memos and business letters, and a tutorial aimed at uninformed, international visitors. You will be required to purchase a coursepack of materials for this class, but no formal textbook.
