Course Description
This course is designed to provide the student with a general introduction to the field of linguistics with an emphasis on English. A general list of topics to be covered is given in the Reading Schedule section below. This course is similar to Linguistics 350: Introduction to Linguistics and is not open to students who have taken that course for credit. It satisfies the prerequisites for upper division courses in Linguistics and English language in the Department of English and in the Linguistics Program of the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics.
The Text and Class Handouts:
Crystal: The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language
Handouts will be displayed on an overhead projector during class. tudents are advised to have paper copies of handouts also; these can be obtained as downloads from my website, http://www.uwm.edu/~noonan/: navigate to CLASSES, then to your class. If you can't download the handouts and need paper copies, you can obtain the copies at cost by special arrangement with the instructor. The daily schedule for the handouts is given below.
Exams and Exercises:
There will be no exams for this course. Instead, the course grade will be based on take-home exercises, of which there will be 14. Copies of the exercises can be downloaded from my website, http://www.uwm.edu/~noonan/.
Grading:
The grades on the exercises will constitute the sole basis for the course grade. Any exercise not turned in will be recorded with the grade 'F'. Late exercises will be accepted with no loss of credit until the corrected papers have been returned to the class, after which the highest grade they can be given is a 'C' [exceptions can be made only in the case of genuine illness or emergency]. Normally, corrected papers will be returned to the class the next class meeting after they are due.
