Course Description

The course will focus primarily on John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost. We will also read some of his prose works and shorter poems, and supplementary readings (critical articles, excerpts from a variety of texts) will provide some historical, literary, and cultural context.

The main work students do in the course is reading Paradise Lost, which is more than 10,000 lines in length. All assignments, as well as class discussion, require that students read the poem carefully and on schedule. Students should consider whether they can make this commitment to the poem and the class.

Course Requirements include: completion of assigned readings; reading quizzes; mid-term and final exams; missing lines paper; some brief writing assignments.
