Course Description

James Joyce (1882-1941) is one of the major representatives of literary Modernism. There are many facets to his work: there is an Irish Joyce, an international Joyce, a postcolonial Joyce, a satirical Joyce, a Classical Joyce, and so on. In this course, we will explore different facets of Joyce's work with the aid of a variety of background materials, ranging from ancient mythology to contemporary criticism. The class will focus on Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses.

Assessment will be based on a class presentation focused on a particular facet of Joyce's work and designed to stimulate discussion (20%), class participation (10%), and two research papers (35% each).
