Course Description
This course provides an overview of the various approaches to teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult/university-level learners. We will trace the historical development of second language teaching methods from grammar-based curricula to the present-day focus on interactive methods and negotiated learning. We will also discuss progress in the field of second language acquisition that has led to the development of each method. Students will thus gain an understanding of the theoretical basis of ESL pedagogy. In addition, they will gain practical experience by observing ESL classes. In class, we will discuss the readings, do individual and group projects, and interact with guest speakers who are professionals in the field. Outside of class, students will be responsible for observing ESL classes in the Intensive English Program (IEP) at UWM or at another adult ESL site in the Milwaukee area. By the end of the semester, students will be well-versed in applying the interactive methods that are currently being used in most ESL classrooms, and they will be qualified to enter adult ESL classrooms as apprentice teachers.
