Transporting Hazardous Materials Safely

The Federal hazardous materials transportation law (49 U.S.C. § 5101 et seq.), is the basic statute regulating the transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat) in the United States. This law requires that ALL hazmat employees be trained. The purpose is to increase a hazmat employee's safety awareness and in turn reduce the likelihood of a hazmat incident or accident.

The University is Responsible for:

  • Ensuring that each hazmat employee is provided with training.
  • Providing affected employees with familiarity of the requirements.
  • Enabling employees to recognize and identify hazardous materials.
  • Providing Safety Training.
  • Documenting its training program.
  • Retaining training records for as long as employee is employed
  • Providing a written test
  • Keeping those training records in a centralized location
