Guide to the Safe use of Radionuclides at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

Section 21:   Radiation Safety Program for the UWM Field Station at Saukville

The Field Station Director is responsible for the overall operation of the UWM Field Station. The UWM Field Station Committee must approve all research projects conducted at the station, including those that involve ionizing radiation. Teaching and research projects involving radiation must therefore be approved by the Director, the Field Station Committee, and the Radiation Safety Officer. Project descriptions must include a detailed outline of pertinent radiation safety requirements and how they are to be implemented.

The project director must be registered with the Radiation Safety Program as an Authorized User. It is the responsibility of the project director to arrange for secure storage, area monitoring, personnel monitoring, safe transport and other considerations that may be necessary for compliance with NRC regulations. Only the amount of radioactivity necessary for a specific teaching or research project will be taken to the Field Station. When the project is completed, all used, unused and waste materials must be packaged per DOT specifications and transported back to the main campus for storage or disposal. Temporary storage of radioactive materials at the Field Station is limited to those projects which continue on a day-to-day basis.
